Nigerian Senators are not planning to impeach Senator David Mark, the president of the Senate, Abaribe Eyinnaya, spokesperson for the upper legislative chamber said on Monday.

He was reacting to stories in some major Nigerian newspapers that some senators who failed to secure the senatorial tickets of the ruling Peoples Democratic are planning to move against the Senate President when the upper chamber resumed on Tuesday.

The Senators were reportedly aggrieved that the Senate President failed to protect their interests before their party and the presidency, thus allowing their State Governors to work against their return to the legislative chamber. But the Senate spokesperson in a statement released on Monday described the reports as false imaginations which exists only in the imagination of its authors.

According to him, senators operating as a body of one united family, have never at any time found any ground to move against its leadership or even thwart the long-standing camaraderie the Upper Chamber is known for, irrespective of political party affiliation.

He added that the Senate has a tested internal mechanism, which has severally been ably deployed by the President of the Senate and members of his leadership to tackle any difficult issues that arise within and outside the chamber.

Such mechanisms and channels, Abaribe said, are inexhaustible and shall always be deployed by the leadership of the Senate, as it always does when the need arises.

“Senators have implicit confidence in the leadership of the Senate ably led by Senator Mark and there is nothing now to suggest or confer any iota of truth on the media insinuation of any form of schism that could warrant the removal of the President of the Senate”, he said.
