Jonathan and Deby Itno in heart-to-heart talk

President Goodluck Jonathan jetted to Ndjamena, capital of Chad today, for another meeting with President Idris Deby Itno.

The mission of the visit was not stated by the presidency this morning, but there are indications that it may be connected with the Boko Haram insurgency, tormenting Nigeria since 2009. And President Jonathan may need to ask his Chadian counterpart what happened to the millions of dollars paid to forge a ceasfire with Boko Haram.

Jonathan was warmly received by President Idris Deby, who was linked with what turned out to be a fake, multi-million dollars ceasefire talks with a man, Danlami Ahmadu who presented himself in October as an ally of Boko Haram leader, Abubakar Shekau.

Conspicuously missing in President Jonathan’s entourage was the former Governor of Borno State, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, accused by Australian negotiator, Dr.Stephen Davis as a Boko Haram sponsor and accessory. Sheriff’s presence at a meeting Jonathan held with Idris Deby on 8 September, drew a lot of eyebrows and condemnations.

Jonathan’s latest visit came amidst reports by a Cameroonian investigative journalist, Bisong Etahoben, about the arrest of Mahamat Bichara Gnoti, a close associate of Chadian President Idris Déby Itno, on the Chadian-Sudan border with 19 SAM2 missiles he purchased from the Sudanese army meant for the Boko Haram terrorist network in northeastern Nigeria.

Mr. Gnoti who claimed that President Idriss Déby gave him the funds to purchase the weapons, had waved a presidential pass issued to him by Mr. Deby’s office in order to get past border guards but was stopped and searched by the guards who found the deadly weapons on him, according to a report by Sahara Reporters at the weekend.
