Italian champions Juventus announced the contract extensions of club captain and veteran goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon as well as vice-captain Giorgio Chiellini on Thursday.

Speaking at a press conference in Vinovo to reveal the extensions, club president Agnelli stated “Their leadership is so important. They stayed with Juve in Serie B and have helped us to return to the top.”

On his part, Buffon said ”I want to continue performing to a high level, so that I can be an asset and a point of reference for the club,” adding that ”I am very happy to be sharing a day like this with Chiellini. He is a great example for young people.”

The Italian goalkeeper also stated it will be his last contract, saying “As both parties wished to continue, it was the natural choice to extend my contract for another two years. The fact that it will be my last contract was a factor.”

Chiellini meanwhile stated “I am excited to be here. It makes me think back to all the people who have helped me grow and become a man in Turin.”

The Italian international added that “behind our historic achievements there is one big family that works every day to help us achieve our objectives. We all continue to have big dreams, with hard work and daily sacrifice as our starting point.”

36-year old Buffon, who joined Juve from Parma in 2001, sealed a two-year extension which keeps him in Turin until 2017 while Chiellini’s contract extension will keep him at the club until 2018.
