Former Super Eagles’ Head Coach Adegboye Onigbinde on Wednesday said the team’s failure to qualify for 2015 AFCON was because the team kicked off the qualifiers on a weak note.
Onigbinde told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that the team failed to place its priorities right.
The former CAF and FIFA Instructor said the failure to qualify did not come as a surprise to him based on the way the Stephen Keshi-led squad kicked off their campaign.
“I’m not surprised that we have found ourselves in this situation. We needed to get it right from the beginning. Whoever fails to plan plans to fail.
“It’s not a new thing, we have lost on so many occasions. As usual, we will complain and fail to address issues which made us fail. We don’t learn and we just expect miracles.
“But God has shown that even if he gives you several opportunities, he knows when to give others their chance to shine. It’s so unfortunate. But, like I said, I was not shocked,” Onigbinde said.
The Keshi-led squad which had won the 2013 AFCON failed to qualify for the 2015 edition of the tournament after finishing third in Group A of the final qualifiers.
It was the second time in three years that they would not feature in the tournament. They were also missing in Equatorial Guinea/Gabon in the 2012 edition.
