Second seed Maria Sharapova has crashed out of the WTA Finals along with Petra Kvitova from the White Group in Singapore, missing her chance to end the year as world number one as a result.

Sharapova bowed out of the season-ending tournament despite defeating Agnieszka Radwanska in their final round-robin match, with Radwanska qualifying for the semi-finals instead.

The Russian could have qualified for the last four had she won the Pole in straight-sets, but three match points missed in the second set of her 7-5 6-7 6-2 win sealed her fate.

The result for Sharapova means top seed Serena Williams will finish the year at the top of the ranking, with the American reaching the last four in Singapore thanks to her 6-1 6-1 win over Bouchard coupled with Ana Ivanovic’s inability to beat Simona Halep in straight sets.

Halep finished top of the Red Group and will face Radwanska for a place in the final while Serena will meet with in-form Caroline Wozniacki – who won all her round-robin matches – in the other semi-final.
