Former Manchester United defender John O’Shea scored four minutes into stoppage time to earn Republic of Ireland an unlikely point away at Germany in a 2016 European Championship qualifying match this evening.
Following a goalless first half in Munich, midfielder Toni Kroos had broken the deadlock for Germany with 20 minutes left on the clock, with the world champions heading for the win only for O’Shea to intervene for Ireland with a 94th minute equaliser.
The result, coupled with Poland playing out a 2-2 draw at home to Scotland, leaves Ireland top of Group D in qualifying ahead of Poland on goal difference while Germany occupy third spot with four points from three matches, three points behind the Irish and Poles.
Meanwhile Ballon d’Or holder Cristiano Ronaldo struck in the fifth minute of stoppage time to give Portugal a crucial 1-0 win away at Denmark in a Group I encounter.
The result gave Portugal a first win in the qualifying campaign and sees the Iberian nation now occupying third spot in the group standings with three points, a point and place behind Denmark.
Albania lead the group for now with four points though its qualifying match at Serbia had to be abandoned in the first half due to fighting between both sides after a Kosovo-bearing flag was flown onto the pitch.
Elsewhere in Euro 2016 qualifying this evening, Haris Seferovic scored twice as Switzerland won 4-0 at San Marino to get their first win of the campaign in the only match played in Group E.
Northern Ireland maintained their perfect start to qualifying with a 2-0 win at 2004 European champions Greece in a Group F encounter in Athens, with Romania staying two points behind in second courtesy of a 2-0 win at Finland.
