Warri Wolves moved to within a point of league leaders Kano Pillars courtesy of an away win in one of the Nigeria Premier League matches played across the country this evening.

Wolves had Oghene Etebo sent off but still managed to come away with a 2-1 win over relegation threatened Bayelsa United in a tense encounter at the Sam Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin.

Freedom Omofoman had given the visitors a fifth minute lead with a stunning effort while Etebo doubled the advantage for Wolves midway through the first half with a curling freekick.

Etebo came close to putting Wolves further ahead when his 37th minute effort came off the post, while missed a great chance to pull one back before the half-time break when striker Peter Ebimobowe missed a penalty in the 45th minute.

Bayelsa would eventually pull a goal back 10 minutes into the second half from another penalty which was converted by Olufemi Oladapo this time, with Wolves player Etebo getting sent off for his protest against the award of the penalty.

Despite the man advantage, Bayelsa was unable to find a way past a resolute Wolves side which held on to claim a crucial win in the race for the 2014 league title.

The result in Benin leaves Wolves on 52 points with six matches left in the season, behind Kano Pilllars with 53 points after the defending champions lost 1-0 at Sharks in Port-Harcourt.

Fortune Omoniwari’s poked effort gave Sharks the lead on the half-hour mark, with the home side missing a penalty minutes later as it held on for a win which helped throw the title race wide open.
