Qatar has promised to donate $1 billion in reconstruction aid for Gaza at a donor conference in Cairo on Sunday, topping US and European pledges for the devastated Palestinian enclave.
“Qatar announces its participation with $1 billion for the reconstruction of Gaza,” said Khalid bin Mohammad Al Attiyah, the foreign minister of the gas-rich country.
The donation represents a big part of the estimated $5.4billion pledged by international envoys for the rebuilding of the city, massively destroyed by Israeli missiles in a recent war that also made destitute over 100,000 people.
Norway’s foreign minister Boerge Brende, co-host of the donors’ conference said at the end of the event that: “The participants pledged approximately $5.4 billion (4.3 billion euros)”
