IPU confab opens today, Mark leads Nigerian delegates

The 131st Inter- Parliamentary Union (IPU) will begin today in Geneva, Switzerland, with Nigeria’s Senate President, David Mark leading fellow parliamentarians to the talks.

Chief Press Secretary to the Senate President, Mr Paul Mumeh said Mark will on Oct. 13, address the Assembly on terrorism in Nigeria.

He would also address efforts so far made by the country as well as the support given by the international community in tackling the menace.

The senate president is also expected to lead Nigerian debate on achieving gender equality and measures toward ending violence against women.

Another issue slated for debate at the global conference includes international law as it relates to national sovereignty.

Other issues for debate include non-intervention in the internal affairs of states and human rights as well as the election of the president and vice president of IPU.

Among Mark’s delegation are Deputy Speaker, House of Representatives, Emeka Ihedioha, Senators Helen Esuene, Abdulazeez Usman, Edobor Uzamere and Hassan Barata Hassan.

House of Representatives’ members, Mohammed Sani, Daniel Reneiju, Bello Binta Fatima and Ibrahim Dorguwa are also on the delegation.

They are expected back in Nigeria on Oct. 17.

Among other things, the conference will elect a successor to the incumbent President of IPU, Mr Abdelwahab Radi of Morocco, whose tenure ends this October.

Radi was elected for a three year mandate on Oct. 19, 2011 at the 189th session of the governing council in Bern, Canada.
