Oluremi Oyo, veteran journalist, editor and two-time managing director of The News Agency of Nigeria has died. She was aged 62.

She died yesterday in London, after a protracted illness, according to family sources.

The cause of death was not disclosed., but cancer is suspected.

Oyo, who also was special assistant, media to President Olusegun Obasanjo, was first female President of the Guild of Editors and worked for many years with the Inter Press Service and the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos. She was at a stage the bureau chief of Inter Press.

In April 2012, Pope Benedict XVI bestowed on her the honour of Papal Dame of the Order of St. Gregory the Great.

She was appointed in 2005 to run the News Agency of Nigeria.

An indigene of Usi-Ekiti, she was educated at the University of Lagos, Akoka and the University of Kent, Canterbury.

Oyo began her journalism career at the Federal Radio Corporation, Ikoyi.

The late journalist is survived by her husband, Vincent Oyo, broadcaster and public relations consultant, a son, Otome and daughter, Otie, several grandchildren.
