Spanish international Gabi Fernandez has admitted to State prosecutor of his involvement in fixing a Primera Liga match against Levante in May 2011 while he was a captain of Real Zaragoza.
The 31-year old, who currently is captain of Spanish champions Atletico Madrid, scored both goals in Zaragoza’s 2-1 win over Levante, a result that prevented Zaragoza from relegation in the 2010-11 season.
It is also alleged that 12 Levante players received €120,000 each to lose the match, which is one of nine matches listed for investigation by Spanish league president Javier Tebas.
According to Gabi however, he had simply done what he was asked to by Zaragoza and had taken no payments since he had agreed a move to Atletico for a second spell, having spent five years during his first spell in the Spanish capital.
Regardless, the midfielder is likely to be banned from involvement in the sport, though his cooperation with authotities could see the length of any possible ban from football being minimal.
