Floyd “Money” Mayweather jr. has retained his WBC Welterweight, WBC Super welterweight and WBA Super welterweight belts after defeating challenger Marcos Maidana by unanimous points decision at the MGM Grand Arena earlier this morning.
Mayweather had earlier in May come through a tough contest to defeat the Argentine by unanimous decision though this time around, the champion got the win on all score cards, registering 115-112, 116-111 and 116-111 with the three judges.
Fight night saw Mayweather dominate his opponent, using quick feet to ensure Maidana was unable to corner him and land potentially hard punches that would open a window to shock the champ.
There was a moment though at the end of the third round when Maidana was able to land a punch which dazed Mayweather, with the Argentine following up by having the upper hand in most of the fourth round.
Mayweather however recovered to reclaim dominance of the bout from the fifth round, frustrating Maidana along the way to see out the night with relative ease despite seemingly getting bit in the left hand in round 8.
Afterwards, Mayweather berated himself by saying “I give myself a C, C-. I am better than that. I felt I did better in the first fight. This fight I felt dry and dead.”
With the win, Mayweather maintained a flawless fight record of 47 wins with 26 knockouts and no losses, winning all 13 bouts he has fought in the MGM and going 23-0 in title fights.
