The 22-year-old returned to Stamford Bridge during the close season after spending three years on loan at Atletico Madrid and has supplanted Petr Cech as manager Jose Mourinho’s first-choice goalkeeper.

“I’m very happy with this new deal. It’s really nice to have signed this new contract for five years,” Courtois told the Chelsea website.

“My future was already sorted, but it’s nice to know I’m going to be here for another five years and now I can just concentrate on playing games.”

Courtois joined Chelsea from Belgian side Genk in 2011, but was immediately loaned to Atletico, where he won the Spanish league title last season and played in the Champions League final.

He has made 23 appearances for Belgium and played in the team that reached the quarter-finals at the World Cup in Brazil.
