The Elephants of Cote D’Ivoire were dealt a bitter blow in the quest to reach Morocco 2015 following a 4-1 loss to Cameroun in a Cup of African Nations qualifying match today in Yaounde.
Both nations came into the encounter with a chance to gain an early advantage in qualification having won their opening qualifying matches in Group D last weekend.
And it was the Indomitable Lions that ran away with the crucial win, as a brace in each half from Clinton Njie and Vincent Aboubakar helped the hosts to a big win.
Njie gave Cameroun the lead after 15 minutes but the Ivorians were back on level terms 10 minutes later through captain Yaya Toure who reacted quickest to slot in a rebound.
Cameroun however took the lead again 10 minutes later through Aboubakar, with the France-based striker grabbing a second 10 minutes into the second half to extend Cameroun’s lead.
The Ivorians were left shell-shocked when Njie sealed the emphatic result for the four-time African champions with a fierce volley from close range for his second of the day 14 minutes from time.
Cameroun now lead Group D with six maximum points with DR Congo replacing the Ivorians in second place by virtue of goal difference following a 2-0 win away at Sierra Leone in the group’s other match.
In other qualifying matches, Ghana came from a goal down to get a 3-2 win over Togo in Lome to go second with four points in Group E of qualifying, with Uganda topping the group on goal difference following a 2-0 win over Guinea in Kampala.
