It was an evening of great upsets at Flushing Meadow in New York as the two top seeds, Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer were shoved out of the US Open.
Japan’s Kei Nishikori,seeded 10th in New York, was the first to create the first upset, beating World number one Djokovic in four sets., 6-4, 1-6, 7-6, 6-3.
A while after a rain delay, Croatia’s 14th seeded Marin Cilic overwhelmed 17-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer 6-3, 6-4, 6-4. Federer was seeded number two.
The result was an unlikely pairing for the US Open final, Cilic versus Nishikori, far beyond the expectations of bookmakers.
The 14th-seeded Cilic, who missed last year’s US Open as he served a doping ban, reached his first Grand Slam final, denying the 33-year-old Federer’s dream of a sixth title in Flushing Meadows. Nishikori, who also made a Japanese record, denied Djokovic, the opportunity to reach the final, where he was the runner up last year.
