Diego Costa made it two goals in two Premier League matches for Chelsea as the Blues earned a 2-0 win at home to newly promoted Leicester City while West Ham United compounded Crystal Palace’s woes with a 3-1 defeat.

The Spanish international had scored Chelsea’s first of the season at newly promoted Burnley on Monday and he again opened Chelsea’s account just after the hour mark today.

Before then, Jose Mourinho’s side were frustrated by a compact Leicester City and came close to taking the lead but Oscar’s effort came off the post early in the second half.

Then the visitors came close to taking the lead against the run of play, twice, but Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois thwarted David Nugent on both occasions.

Those saves proved crucial as Costa gave the Blues the lead minutes later, doing just enough to get on Branislav Ivanovic’s pass and steer the ball past Kasper Schmeichel in the Leicester goal.

The result was sealed in the 76th minute through Eden Hazard, sending Chelsea top of the league with six points from two matches ahead of Swansea City on goal difference.

The Welsh side opened its campaign with a 2-1 win at Manchester United last weekend and were content with a Nathan Dyer strike in a 1-0 win at home to Burnley today.

Elsewhere, life after Tony Pulis continued to be hard for Crystal Palace as the Eagles fell to the bottom of the league with a 3-1 loss at home to London rivals West Ham United.

Argentine striker Mauro Zarate opened the scoring for West Ham with a 34th minute volley while Stewart Downing added a second for the visitors three minutes later.

Marouane Chamakh pulled a goal back for Palace three minutes into the second half but a hope of a comeback was vanquished just after the hour mark as Carlton Cole made it 3-1 for West Ham.

In other matches played today, Aston Villa was held to a goalless draw at home by 10-man Newcastle United and Southampton also played out a goalless draw at home to West Brom.

Nigerian striker Brown Ideye made his debut for West Brom in the encounter at St. Mary’s Stadium when he came on as a second half substitute for compatriot Victor Anichebe.

Ideye forced a save from Saints goalkeeper Fraser Forster as the visitors finished the match strong, while Southampton’s best chance at goal was a James Ward-Prawse freekick which strucl the post.

Later today, Arsenal will visit Everton in another Premier League encounter.
