Kano Pillars suffered a 3-0 defeat in Akure but remained top of the Nigeria Premier League after the weekend’s matches while Enyimba played out a draw with Rangers in an oriental derby.
Sunshine Stars produced a dominant display against Okey Emordi’s side, with a goal in each half by Musa Newman giving the home side a 2-0 lead after 62 minutes.
And though Tamen Medrani’s effort came off the woodwork in the 86th minute, Sunshine would complete a comprehensive defeat of the champions through Prince Aggreh’s stoppage time effort.
Despite the result, the northerners maintained top spot on the league table with 37 points from 22 matches, a point ahead of Abia Warriors that got a 2-0 win at home to El-Kanemi Warriors.
Goals from Michael Okoro in the fifth minute and Chisom Chikatara just before half-time gave the home side victory in a close encounter between two Warriors in Umuahia, with El-Kanemi dominating the second half but failing to find a way back.
Nasarawa United meanwhile follow Abia Warriors in third place with 35 points after coming away from Uyo with a goalless draw against midtable Akwa United, while Dolphins, Warri Wolves and Lobi Stars trail Nasarawa by a point.
Dolphins settled for a point in the 1-1 draw against Giwa FC in Jos, with Bolaji Sakin seeing a late goal for the Port-harcourt side ruled out for offside.
Warri Wolves on their part got a lone goal win at home to bottom club Nembe City through a Gbolahan Salami penalty just before the hour mark. Lobi Stars meanwhile beat Sharks of Port-harcourt by a lone goal as well.
In other results, Austin Eguavoen’s Gombe United came away from Benin with a lone goal win over Bayelsa United, FC Taraba beat 10-man Kaduna United 2-0 thanks to a Fidelis Saviour brace in Jalingo while new signing Bobby Clement scored the winner as Heartland beat Crown FC 1-0 in Owerri.
