Veteran midfielder Frank Lampard is set to complete a loan switch to Premier League champions Manchester City from New York City FC, two months after leaving Premier League club Chelsea.
The 36-year old England midfielder had signed for new Major League Soccer franchise New York City FC in July, with the MLS club one of three overseas ventures of Manchester City alongside Japan’s Yokohama F-Marinos and Melbourne City in Australia; where Spanish striker David Villa has gone on loan as well.
Man. City manager Manuel Pellegrini confirmed Lampard will be with the club until January when he is expected to return to New York for the 2015 MLS season, adding that the midfielder will be an important member of the squad.
Lampard, who won three league titles and a UEFA Champions League title among others during his 13-year spell at Chelsea, will join up with Man. City on Wednesday ahead of Sunday’s Community Shield clash against Arsenal.
While the midfielder is unlikely to feature in the season curtain raiser, he could come up against his former club when Chelsea visit the Etihad stadium in the Premier League on the weekend of September 20.
