Daniel Ricciardo of Red Bull has won the Hungarian Grand Prix in a race that saw the lead change multiple times and Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton close the gap on teammate Nico Rosberg on the drivers championship.
Rosberg started the race in pole position while Hamilton started from the pits having failed to post a time in final qualifying on Saturday due to engine problems.
The Briton however had moved up to 13th by the seventh lap – with Rosberg still in the lead – when the safety car was deployed for the first time due to Marcus Ericsson’s crash.
Halfway through the 70 laps however, Fernando Alonso of Ferrari had taken the lead while Hamilton had found his way up to second place while Rosberg was out of the top seven having used the pits.
There was controversy between the Mercedes drivers at the time, with Hamilton going contrary to the team’s message to allow Rosberg pass him, asking that Rosberg should get closer if he wants a pass.
Ricciardo then took the lead until the 54th lap when he went into the pits for the last time, rejoining the race in fourth place behind Alonso, Hamilton and Rosberg.
The pulsating race ended in dramatic fashion as Ricciardo, who had risen to third with seven laps to go, managed to get past Alonso and Hamilton to win the race for his second win of the season.
Rosberg ended the race in fourth and saw his lead on the championship reduced to 11 points by Hamilton as a result, while Ricciardo follows in third with 131 points.
