England's O'Connor wins 200m individual medley

Glasgow- Siobhan O’Connor claimed her first gold medal of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and took her medal tally overall to four with a resounding victory in the 200m individual medley.

The 19-year-old smashed the Commonwealth Games record in a time of 2min 08:21 to beat reigning champion Alicia Coutts of Australia into second.

“I’m absolutely over the moon. I knew it would be so hard to get a medal because of the strength of the field so I can’t ask for any more,” said O’Connor.

Scotland’s Hannah Miley backed up her gold medal in the 400m individual medley with bronze and O’Connor said her training partner had been an inspiration.

“Hannah’s been my role model and it’s been great to train with her.”
