2014 Formula 1 championship leader Nico Rosberg has signed a multi-year contract extension at Mercedes following a stellar season that has seen him finish on the podium at all but one race so far this season.

Rosberg joined Mercedes in 2010 when the German carmaker made its return to the Formula 1 sport, winning six races ever since including three in the first eight races of this season.

In a statement announcing the contract extension, team boss Toto Wolff said ”Nico has been part of the Silver Arrows project since day one and he has a big stake in the development of the team since 2010.”

Wolff stated further that ”This new contract brings us important stability and continuity for the future and I am delighted to be able to make the announcement in time for the home race of Mercedes-Benz and Nico in Hockenheim.”

On his part, the 29 year old German driver stated that ”as a German, the heritage of Mercedes-Benz is very special for me… I’m looking forward to the next years together, when we will keep pushing to win even more races – and, hopefully, championships.”

Rosberg, who recently got married, would be aiming for a better outing this weekend at the German grand prix – where he has never finished on podium – after being forced to retire at the British grand prix won a fortnight ago by teammate Lewis Hamilton.

Hamilton’s win and Rosberg’s technical issues ensured Rosberg’s lead on the drivers’ championship was cut to four points by Hamilton.
