The Bayelsa Government said on Friday that it would blacklist contractors in the state whose performance fell below standard.

The Commissioner for Local Government Administration, Chief Mitema Obordor, disclosed this in Yenagoa when he received the report of the Technical Committee on Project Evaluation.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the committee was inaugurated on Feb. 22, to inspect and review the 32 Rural Development Authorities (RDAs) secretariat complexes under-construction.

The committee upon inauguration was also mandated to undertake a review of all projects under the ministry and make recommendations.

Obordor, who commended the committee for a job well done, warned that the present administration in the state would not accommodate any contractor who failed to perform credibly.

“The administration of Gov. Seriake Dickson is poised to better the lots of our people especially in the rural areas.

“To this end, we are determined to provide the enabling infrastructure for our people to feel the impact of government.

“The government will not hesitate to blacklist any contractor who failed to deliver on standard because we want the best for our people,” he said.

The commissioner said government inaugurated the committee as a result of the various reforms being carried out under the restoration programme in the state to bring succour to the people.

He said that before the setting up the committee, some of the projects in the RDAs were at very low level, while others were abandoned.

Obodor also said recommendations made by the committee would be submitted to the state government for necessary action.

Presenting the report to the commissioner earlier, the Chairman of the committee, Chief Austine Jacobs, recommended for a N15.9 million variation on the initial project cost.

According to him, the recommendation for a variation was necessitated by the committee’s observation of many structural defects in all most all the projects visited.

The chairman said that the variation, if approved, would put the total projects cost at more than N51 million.

He also said that after critical review of some of the projects, the committee recommended for the termination of three RDA secretariat contracts.

Jacobs said the affected contracts included the Kolokuma/Opokuma RDA secretariat project awarded to Godsidi Investment Ltd.

Others were the Brass RDA secretariat project awarded to Marye Concerns Inc. and the Tarakiri RDA secretariat building project awarded to Safe Resources Inc.

The chairman explained that the committee’s decision was based on the use of poor and substandard building materials and wrong DPC heights of the buildings.

He also alleged poor quality and level of work done by the contractors compared to the amount received so far.
