Klose Sets World Cup Goals Record

Miroslav Klose has set a new record for most World Cup goals scored by a player following his first half goal for Germany in the semi-final match against host nation Brazil.

The 36 year old striker had equalled Ronaldo’s record of 15 goals during the 2-2 draw against Ghana in the group stage, going on to set the record with Germany’s second in the devastating 7-1 thrashing of Brazil on Tuesday night.

Klose’s goal against Brazil extended his record as Germany’s all-time leading goalscorer with 71 goals from 136 appearances, ahead of Gerd Müller who scored 68 goals.

He is also one of five Germans to have scored at least 10 World Cup goals alongside 24 year old Thomas Müller who is on course to eclipse Klose’s record in the near future after scoring his 11th goal in 13 World Cup appearances against Brazil.

The Lazio striker, who has never lost a match in which he scored for Germany, is also one of only three players after Brazil’s Pele and Uwe Seeler of West Germany to score a goal in four editions of the World Cup.

Crucially, his strike against Brazil, which went in at the second attempt after Julio Cesar had kept out an initial effort, was his first World Cup goal scored in the semi-final stage.

Klose meanwhile could fall just one game short of equalling the record for most appearances made in the World Cup, held by compatriot Lothar Matthaus’ who played 25 World Cup matches between 1986 and 2002.
