Vahid Halihodzic has stepped down as coach of Algeria a week after leading the North African side to the second round of the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

It was the first time in World Cup history Algeria had qualified from the group stage, before eventually bowing out in valiant fashion after extra-time to Germany.

The Bosnian tactician, who has been linked to become manager of Turkish side Trapzonspor, left his post with Algeria despite pleas from the country’s president Abdelaziz Bouteflika for him to extend his stay.

Halihodzic became Algeria coach in 2011 on a three year deal following a stint with the Cote D’Ivoire national team.
