Five-time grand slam winner Maria Sharapova has crashed out of Wimbledon following a three-set loss to ninth seed Angelique Kerber of Germany in a fourth round match at the All-England club.

Sharapova, whose sole Wimbledon triumph came 10 years ago, lost the first set on a tie-break but rallied to claim the second set 6-4 to send the match to a deciding third set.

Kerber broke first in the final set to quickly establish a 3-0 lead against the fifth seeded Russian and though Sharapova broke back, Kerber held on to claim a 7-6, 4-6, 6-4 win over the reigning French Open champion.

The German, who is now the third highest seeded player left in the women’s draw after third seed Simona Halep and sixth seed Petra Kvitova, will next face Eugenie Bouchard in the quarterfinal.

Earlier, Halep eased into the quarterfinals with a 6-3, 6-0 win over 20 year old Zarina Diyas.

In the men’s draw, seven-time Wimbledon champion Roger Federer came through his fourth round match against Tommy Robredo in straight sets to set up a quarterfinal clash on Wednesday with Swiss compatriot Stanislas Wawrinka.

Federer eased to a 6-1, 6-4, 6-4 over Robredo in a little over 90 minutes while Wawrinka reached the Wimbledon quarterfinals for the first time in his career in a slightly tougher match which ended in a 7-6, 7-6, 6-3 win for the Australian Open champion.

Elsewhere, Milos Raonic came from a set down to defeat Kei Nishikori of Japan 4-6, 6-1, 7-6, 6-3 to book his place in the quarterfinals.
