German Socialist Martin Schulz, new EU parliament president

European_Union_smallSTRASBOURG – German Social-Democrat Martin Schulz was elected on Tuesday, to head the European Parliament at its first meeting since May elections, in a session marred by opposition from eurosceptic lawmakers.

Schulz, outgoing president of the last European Parliament, won 409 votes within the 721-member parliament after a secret ballot.
