Andy Murray began his defence of the Wimbledon crown with a straight sets win while the women’s draw saw a another seeded player suffer a shock first round loss in London.

Seeded fourth for the grass court grand slam, Murray eased to a 6-1, 6-4, 7-5 win over David Goffin of Belgium to set up a second round match against Blaz Rola on Wednesday.

In the women’s draw, American 18th seed Sloane Stephens followed 17th seed Samantha Stosur out of Wimbledon following a straight sets loss to Maria Kirilenko of Russia.

Prior to the match against Stephens, Kirilenko was a top 10 player but had slipped to 109th on the WTA rankings after winning just a match since March.

Against the American today however, Kirilenko eased through the opening set before keeping her composure after seeing a 5-2 lead cancelled out to see off Stephens in a tie-break and seal a 6-2, 7-6 win.

Elsewhere today, there were wins for second seed Li Na, Victoria Azarenka, Petra Kvitova and former champion Venus Williams in the women’s draw.

Second seed Novak Djokovic, surprise French Open semi-finalists Ernests Gulbis, Tomas Berdych, Grigor Dmitrov and David Ferrer also came through their first round matches in the men’s draw.
