The fastest goal of the ongoing 2014 FIFA World Cup was scored as the United States overcame 2010 World Cup quarterfinalists Ghana 2-1 in a Group G match played in Natal.

Despite playing with a suspected broken nose, veteran forward Clint Dempsey put the Americans ahead after only 29 seconds, to beat Sead Kolasinac’s own goal against Bosnia-Herzegovina as fastest goal at the mundial and become the fifth fastest goal in World Cup history.

The Americans lost striker Jozy Altidore to a hamstring injury midway through the first half, minutes after the Sunderland striker had fluffled an effort on goal.

Ghana, who started with Kevin-Prince Boateng on the bench, also failed to convert chances that came their way, with Jordan Ayew and Asamoah Gyan sending efforts from close range off target.

Gyan would however combine with Jordan’s brother to get Ghana’s equaliser with seven minutes to play, flicking a backheel to Andre Ayew who fired home the equaliser.

The last say however went to the Americans courtesy of substitute John Brooks who headed in a cornerkick to seal the win with four minutes left to play.

The win is the first time the USA have beaten Ghana in the World Cup after losing by the same score on two previous occasions.

As a result, Ghana next face group leaders Germany who earlier demolished Portugal 4-0 while the Portuguese will come up against the USA next needing to avoid defeat to keep alive their chances of qualification.
