Former Formula 1 champion Michael Schumacher has been discharged from a hospital in Grenoble where he has spent the year under an induced coma following a ski accident late last year.

Schumacher had suffered severe head injuries from a fall while skiing the Swiss Alps during Christmas last year and had to be put in coma to aid his recovery.

The German has however now been brought out of the six-month coma by doctors and discharged according to a statement from his family.

Schumacher will continue his rehabilitation at an unknown location, with his family keen to keep the former Ferrari driver away from the public while he recovers.

“Michael has left the CHU Grenoble to continue his long phase of
rehabilitation. He is not in a coma anymore. For the future we ask for understanding that his further rehabilitation will take place away from the public eye.”

45 year old Schumacher won seven world titles during his Formula 1 career, including five in a row between 2000 and 2004. He retired in 2007 then came out of retirement in 2010 before finally retiring in 2012.
