Court remands man for defiling 2-year-old girl

Benin – A Magistrates’ Court in Egor, Benin, on Thursday ordered one Chukwudi Nawkor, 28, to be remanded in prison custody for allegedly defiled a 2-year-old girl.

Chief Magistrate Igho Braimoh gave the order following a plea of not guilty by the accused person, who is facing a one-count charge of defilement.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Mr Aburimen Akhere, told the court that the accused committed the offence on May 24, 2014 at No. 13, Egharevba Street, Off Uwelu Road, Benin.

Akhere alleged that the accused had unlawful carnal knowledge of the minor.

According to the prosecutor, the minor was attracted by the children’s song playing in the room of the accused.

He said when the child came out from the accused’s room, her body was smeared.

The prosecutor said the offence contravened the provisions of Section 218 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Bendel State, also applicable in Edo.

If found guilty, the accused is liable upon conviction to life imprisonment.

The case was adjourned until June 22, for commencement of trial.
