Lagos – The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), on Monday said that ministerial regulation would ensure conclusive implementation of the seafarers’ convention.

Ms Juli Gunwa, Head, Maritime and Labour Services, NIMASA, made the declaration at a maritime workers meeting in Lagos.

According to her, the ministerial regulation was part of NIMASA efforts to meet international labour best practises.

“We have made efforts to ensure that dockworkers improve on their skills. Also, regular training was conducted for seafarers to help them meet necessary requirements for onboard placement,” she said.

Gunwa said that the seafarers’ convention scheduled to be implemented on June 18, aims at catering for the welfare of seafarers working on board vessels.

She said that representatives of maritime workers had been participating in the ministerial regulation meeting to ensure that they were fully conversant with the benefits of the convention.

Gunwa said that various programmes have been carried out to enlighten the workers on the importance of the convention.

“We have plans to conduct maritime labour inspectors training for the workers, in line with the requirement of the convention.

“There will also be special sessions with the relevant stakeholders, particularly with the seafarers, which will be carried out in June to know how they will benefit more,” She said.

Gunwa urged the workers to continue to support the Agency to ensure that Nigeria delivered on its mandate as required by all the countries that are signatories to the convention.

She reiterated the need for port workers to sustain peace and harmony in the interest of growth and development of the country.

Also speaking, Mr Konny Awonisiko, Principal Manager, Nigeria Ports Authority (NPA), said that NPA would not neglect the welfare of the workers for effective service delivery.

Awonisiko said that the objective of management was to make NPA competitive in the West African region and it would only be achieved through the contribution and efforts of workers.

He said that plans were made to reward and promote deserving workers and urged them to be dedicated to their jobs for increased productivity.
