Ikeja – Former Abia Governor, Chief Orji Kalu, on Wednesday urged Nigerians to support the Federal Government in the fight against insurgency in the country.
Speaking with newsmen at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, Kalu expressed concern about the incessant terrorists’ attacks in the Northern parts of the country by the Boko Haram.
He urged Nigerians to support President Goodluck Jonathan as the nation collaborated with friendly nations to stop the insurgency and rescue the kidnapped girls.
“There is the need for us to collaborate with the international organisations to resolve this Boko Haram challenge.
“Anybody’s child can be kidnapped; whether it is in Chibok or any other place, Nigerians should take this matter seriously.
“It is because some of us have not lost anybody to Boko Haram or our daughters are not there.
“That is why to some people, it is looking like a joke. We should stop taking this as a joke and take the matter very seriously,” Kalu said.
According to him, to rescue the girls, the government should not be so firm not to negotiate with the Boko Haram, if that will lead to the return of the girls to their families.
Kalu also faulted the Presidential system of government and demanded a return to the Parliamentary system which the nation adopted immediately after independence in 1960.
“My reason is that the appointed ministers would be members of parliament, so that they can see wisdom in serving their nation.
“So they can see wisdom in contributing to the arguments about the prosperity of the country.
“The fact remains that the major problem we have in our system is corruption and we have not been able to address that corruption in every facet of our lives.
“I believe genuinely that the parliamentary system is cheaper and cost effective and it is also the way to go for our democracy to flourish,” he said.
