Former African champions Zamalek of Egypt and Esperance of Tunisia suffered shock defeats in the opening round of matches in the group stage of the 2014 CAF Champions League.

Zamalek, managed by former Egyptian striker Amr Zaki, fell to a 2-1 defeat at AS Vita of DR Congo in a Group A match through goals in each half from Ndombe Mubele and Emmanuel Ngudikama for AS Vita, the latter’s stoppage time winner cancelling out Moamen Zakaria’s equaliser for Zamalek.

AS Vita as a result lead the group with three points, ahead of Al-Hilal of Sudan by virtue of goals scored. Al-Hilal that edged DR Congo’s other representative and four-time Champions League winners TP Mazembe by a lone goal in Khartoum.

In Group B, Tunisian champions Esperance fell to a 2-1 loss at home to ES Setif of Algeria. Tunisia’s second representatives CS Sfaxien however fared better with a 3-1 win at home to Al-Ahly Benghazi of Libya.

The Libyan side had earlier knocked out defending champions Al-Ahly of Egypt in the qualifying rounds to ensure a new champion will emerge at the end of this year’s competition.
