Manchester City have won the Premier League title after a 2-0 win over West Ham United, with Liverpool finishing in second place after coming from a goal down to overcome Newcastle United.

Leading by two points at the top ahead of kick-off, Man. City’s work was made easier from Anfield as Martin Skrtel’s own goal put Newcastle ahead at Liverpool, that needed a win coupled with a Man. City loss to win the league.

Skrtel’s own goal had come a minute after Luis Suarez thought he had put Liverpool ahead with a lobbed free-kick, only for referee Phil Dowd to rule the goal out because he was not ready when Suarez took the free-kick.

And all probabilities favouring Liverpool were then dashed six minutes to half time at the Etihad Stadium as Samir Nasri’s long range effort put Man. City ahead against West Ham before captain Vincent Kompany’s goal a minute into the second half sealed a second league title in three seasons for City.

Two goals in two second half minutes from namesakes Daniel Agger and Daniel Sturridge saw Liverpool go 2-1 up against Newcastle, that then had Nigerian striker Shola Ameobi dramatically sent off within a minute of Sturridge’s goal after two yellow cards for dissent.

Newcastle would then be reduced to nine men following a red card to Paul Dummett for a foul on Luis Suarez late on as Liverpool ended the season with 84 points while Man. City finished as champions with 86 points.

Man. City and Liverpool also finished the season with 102 and 101 goals scored respectively, but both fell just short of Chelsea’s record for most goals scored in a Premier League season which stands at 103 goals.

In other matches, goals in three second half minutes from Andre Schürrle and Fernando Torres saw Chelsea come from a Craig Bellamy goal down to win 2-1 at relegated Cardiff City while Aaron Ramsey and Carl Jenkinson were the scorers as Arsenal, ahead of their FA Cup final match against Hull City, won 2-0 at relegated Norwich City.

Juan Mata’s second half free-kick earned Manchester United a 1-1 draw at Southampton, Tottenham Hotspur earned a place in next season’s Europa League in sixth place with a 3-0 win over Aston Villa and Everton finished with 72 points in fifth place after a 2-0 win at FA Cup finalists Hull.

Dwight Gayle scored a brace for Crystal Palace at Fulham in a 2-2 draw, Osaze Odemwingie’s Stoke City won 2-1 at West Brom and Swansea City finished on a high with a 3-1 win at Sunderland.
