Atletico Madrid Miss Chance to Win La Liga Title

This season’s La Liga title will be decided on the final day at the Nou Camp between Atletico Madrid and Barcelona after neither of the two and Real Madrid failed to win for a second successive weekend.

Atletico remain top with 89 points following a 1-1 draw at home to Malaga with Barcelona maintaining second spot, three points behind Atletico after playing out a disappointing goalless draw at Elche.

Real Madrid on their part are out of the title race in third place on 84 points after falling to a shock 2-0 loss at Celta Vigo, with Charles taking advantage of two defensive errors in each half to give Celta the win.

In other matches played today in La Liga, Real Valladolid’s push to escape the relegation zone took a dent in a dramatic 4-3 loss at already relegated Real Betis while Almeria boosted their chances of escaping relegation with a 2-0 win at fellow relegation zone strugglers Granada.

Elche’s goalless draw with Barça ensured their La Liga survival while Getafe’s survival chances were boosted thanks to a lone goal win over Europa League finalists Sevilla.

The title meanwhile will be decided next weekend in a match between Atletico and Barcelona at the Nou Camp, where a win for Barça would see them go level on points with Atletico and hand them the title based on a better head to head record. Any result other than a Barça win and the title would be Atletico’s for the first time since 1996.
