Sunderland took a big step towards Premier League survival following a 4-0 win over fellow strugglers Cardiff City this afternoon in a match played at the Stadium of Light.
English striker Connor Wickham scored a brace while further goals from Fabio Borini with a penalty and Emanuele Giaccherini late on sealed a big win for Gustavo Poyet’s side.
With the win, Sunderland climb from bottom spot to occupy 17th spot with 32 points while Cardiff replace Sunderland as the bottom side with 30 points. Sunderland also have a game in hand as the relegation battle intensifies.
At the other end of the table meanwhile, Liverpool could get a hand on the Premier League title later this afternoon with a win over title rivals Chelsea at Anfield.
