The UN has launched a new high-level platform on digital cooperation, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said during a news briefing on Thursday.

“Ladies and gentlemen, also today I am pleased to announce that I am establishing a high-level panel on digital cooperation.

“This is the first of its kind of the panel and will comprise women and men at the frontiers of technology, public policy, science, and academia,’’ Guterres said.

Guterres said the reason to establish such a panel was obvious, given the high speed with which digital technologies are changing economies and societies.

“The scale and pace of changes are unprecedented and the current means and levels of international cooperation are unequal to the challenge, United Nations is a unique platform in our digital age,’’ the UN chief explained.

The panel is expected to submit its recommendations to Guterres in nine months.
