A Surulere Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos on Monday ordered that a man and a woman be remanded for allegedly stealing two children.

‎The accused, Nseobong Nsikak, 49, and Nelly Etumun, 36,‎ whose addresses were not provided, however, pleaded not guilty to the two-count charge of conspiracy and child theft.

‎The Prosecutor, Sgt. Anthonia Osayande, told the court that the accused committed the offences ‎on March 20 at No. 3, Alhaji Salaudeen Sanni Crescent, Selewu, Igbogbo, Ikorodu, Lagos.

Osayande said the accused persons went to their brother’s house to pick four-year-old, Elijah Eyo, and one-year-old, Esther Eyo, from their house while their parents were having some misunderstanding.

‎The prosecutor said that Toyosi Eyo, the mother of the children, came to report at the station that she left the house due to the misunderstanding.

Osayande said that when the children’s mother visited her husband’s sister, Etumun, who allegedly went with her kids, she was told that her husband had left with the kids.

“Police arrested the two women that left with the kids, but while the police wanted them to settle the case as a family matter, the two women were asked to produce the kids.

“But the wife of Nsikak disappeared to the thin air, hence police arrested her husband and re-arrested the other lady and brought them to court,’’ Osayande said.‎‎‎

According to the prosecutor, the offences contravene Sections ‎275 (1) and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Ipaye‎ Nwachukwu, ordered that the accused persons be remanded in prison.‎

She said she wanted to see the two children in court on the adjourned date. ‎

The court adjourned the case until May 30 for mention.
