The residents of Ubandawaki community in Kalgo Local Government, Kebbi, have commended the state government and the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA) for providing two water pumps to the community.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, the village head, Magaji Deggi, told newsmen on Thursday that the water pumps had provided safe drinking water to people and livestock in the village since 2014, when it replaced the only cement well in the community.

Deggi said the water pumps had relieved the people of shortage of drinking water in the past three years, stressing that the water had improved the sanitation and living conditions of the people.

‘’We have ensured that usage of the hand pumps were regulated, especially considering the relief from the safe drinking water and usage of the hand pump for domestic laundry, cooking and livestock.

‘’We have constituted a management committee to ensure strict compliance with the usage of the hand pump for sustained usage to the benefit of my village,” he said.

Deggi, however, appealed the state rural water supply agency to provide additional water pumps to neighbouring villages to reduce the pressure of the pump located in his village.

The chairman of the village management committee of the water pump, Muhammadu Dan-Lagge, said the villagers had cooperated to ensure proper and sustainable usage of the water pump.

Hajara Sambo, the woman leader in the village, said the safe water from the water pump had contributed towards improving the standard of living of the villagers.

The Genaral manager of the state Rural Water Supply Agency (RUWASA), Muhammadu Argungu, told NAN that efforts would be made to improve rural water supply in collaboration with other stakeholders in the state.
