Akoh: arrested by the police

Mr. Sunday Akoh, National Commandant of Peace Corps of Nigeria was again on Sunday arrested and detained by the police.

It was gathered that Akoh, who had been out of Abuja reported to the Police after he learnt that the Police have been looking for him on his return to the capital city.

The Commandant reportedly arrived at the FCT Police Command about 5.40pm and had a meeting with the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of CID, officer in charge of the SARS and DC of SARS before his detention.

No reason has been given for this latest as officers of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) allegedly fired gunshots on the air to dispatch journalists who had besieged the office where Akoh is being held.

Addressing newsmen on the development, the Corps Public Relations Officer, Patriot Millicent Umoru, confirmed the detention of the National Commandant, Akoh.

“The National Commandant and 49 others were kept in Police detention 2 weeks ago for days, without food and water. As a result, he developed ulcer and was advised to take traditional medicine.

“He just returned from his village this afternoon and was told that the Police came to look for him on Friday. He decided to visit the Police Commissioner to know why they were looking for him, then the DC CID ordered that he should be detained.

“Let it also be known that, there was one Police officer who goes by the name, ‘Abdullahi’, ranting and threatening that he would kill Dickson Akoh, in the presence of the DC CID and others.

“As I speak to you, if anything happens to Dickson Akoh, the Police and Mr. Abdullahi should be held responsible”, Umoru said.

Akoh and 49 other officers of the Corps were arrested on 28th of February, 2017, the day the National Headquarters of the Corps was commissioned in Abuja

However, in a judgment against the Nigerian Police and DSS on Thursday, 17 March, Justice Gabriel Kolawole gave the Police 12 day ultimatum to unseal the National and zonal offices of Peace Corps.
