Emmanuel Ajuloife, a 23-year-old gateman, was on Thursday charged before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing cash and documents worth N280,000 from a man.

Felix Isemin, a resident of Agege area of Lagos, is standing trial on a three-count charge of conspiracy, negligence and stealing.

The prosecutor, Sgt. Rosemary Ehemegbe told the court that the accused, who entered a “not-guilty” plea, committed the offences on Dec. 24, 2016 at Good Shepherd Hotel situated at Dopemu Road, Agege, Lagos.

She alleged that the accused conspired with others now at large, to steal cash worth N280, 000 and valuable documents from the complainant’s car while he lodged at the hotel.

Ehemegbe explained further that the complainant was in a room at the hotel, when one of the hotel attendants came to notify him that the side window of his car had been broken.

She said that Ajuloife rushed to his car and discovered that the cash and vital documents he left in his car had been stolen.

The prosecutor alleged that when Isemin was confronted about the stealing incident, he claimed he did not see anybody burgled the complainant car.

She said that the case was reported to the police and the gateman, Isemin was arrested as a suspect in the stealing incident.

The offences contravened Sections 285, 408 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 285 prescribes a three-year jail term for stealing, while Section 409 stipulates two years.

The Magistrate, Mrs E. Kubeinje granted the accused bail in the sum of N100, 000 with two sureties in like sum and adjourned the case till Feb. 28 for mention.
