Rooney: happy at his new goal scoring record

Wayne Rooney on Saturday expressed delight at becoming Manchester United’s all-time leading goal scorer.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Rooney on Saturday became Manchester United’s all-time leading goal scorer with a sensational stoppage-time free-kick that rescued a point at Stoke City.

Substitute, Rooney curled the ball from the left-hand corner of the penalty box for his 250th Red Devils goal, one more than Sir Bobby Charlton.

In his post-match comments, Rooney said: “it means a hell of a lot. It is a great honour and I am very proud.

“It is difficult at the minute to be over-pleased because of the result but in the grand scheme it is huge honour.

“It is not something I expected when I joined. As I said before, I am proud and I hope there is more to come.

“The players who have played for this club have been world class. I am proud to play for this club. To be all-time goal-scorer is a huge honour,’’ he said.

On the draw with Stoke, he noted that the result could be vital come the end of the season.

“It is no nice to lose and it looked like being the case. But we got a point that could be vital.

“There is a long way to go. A lot can happen. We have to keep picking up points,’’ he said.

On his part, former record-holder, Sir Bobby Charlton said: “i would be lying to say that I’m not disappointed to have lost the record.

“However, I can honestly say that I’m delighted for Wayne. He deserves his place in the history books.

“He is a true great for club and country, and it is fitting that he is now the highest goal-scorer for both United and England.”

Jose Mourinho, United boss, also praised Rooney for the feat, adding that it was a massive record.

“The record is the record. It is the record of the biggest club in England and one of the biggest in the world.

“Before him the record belonged to a legend of English football.

“Now Wayne has become a legend of Manchester United,” he said. (NAN)
