Police arraign man for alleged possession of gun

The News Agency of Nigeria, NAN reports that the Police in Osun, on Tuesday, arraigned one Odeyemi Liadi, 52, over alleged illegal possession of a Dane gun.

Liadi appeared before an Ile-Ife Magistrates’ Court.

The prosecutor, Sgt. Sunday Osanyintuyi, said that the accused on Jan. 13, around 2 p.m. at Ilare Street, Ile-Ife, was caught with a Dane gun and its ammunition without a licence or receipt of purchase.

Osanyintuyi told the court that the accused also conducted himself in a manner likely to cause breach of peace by raising alarm and calling one Samuel Olasoji a thief.

He said that the accused shot Olasoji on the stomach with his Dane gun which resulted to an open wound.

According to him, the offence was contrary to and punishable under Sections 249, 338 and 430 of the Criminal Code Cap 34 Vol 11, Laws of Osun, 2002.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the offence levelled against him.

The Defence Counsel, Mr Samson Akinboyowa, pleaded for the bail of the accused on most Liberal term, saying that granting bail for the accused was a constitutional right.

Akinboyowa promised that his client would not jump bail, assuring that he would stand for his trial and would produce substantial sureties.

Magistrate Iyabo Salami granted bail to the accused in the sum of N50, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

Salami said that one of the sureties must be an accused’s blood relation, while the second surety must have three consecutive years tax clearance certificate and their addresses must be verified by the prosecution.

She adjourned the case to Jan. 31 for hearing.
