The News Agency of Nigeria, NAN reports that a 23- year-old woman, Ayo Olaniyi, who allegedly obtained N131,000 from one Ayo Johnbull under false pretences, on Wednesday appeared before an Apapa Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.

Olaniyi, a resident of Apapa Area of Lagos, pleaded not guilty to a two-count charge of conspiracy and obtaining money under false pretences.

The Prosecutor, Sgt. Olusegun Kokoye, told the court that the accused, committed the offences on Nov. 9 at Alaba International Market, Ojo, Lagos.

According to NAN, Kokoye alleged that the accused and one other at large, obtained N131, 000 from Johnbull with a promise to help deposit the money in the bank, a representation she knew was false.
“But instead of paying the money into the complainant’s account, the accused converted the money to her own personal use.
“When the complainant did not get any alert from his bank, he became worried and decided to go to the bank to find out what had happened,’’ he said.

The prosecutor said that the complainant was shocked, when he discovered that he had been duped by Olaniyi.

He said that when Johnbull confronted Olaniyi about his finding, she denied converting the money to her own personal use.

The prosecutor said that Johnbull reported the case to the police and the accused was immediately arrested.
The offences contravened Sections 312 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

Section 312 prescribes a 15-year jail term for obtaining money under false pretences
The Magistrate, Mr M.A Etti, granted the accused bail in the sum of N100, 000 with two sureties in like sum.
Etti said the sureties must be gainfully employed and also show evidence of three years’ tax payment to the Lagos State Government.
The magistrate adjourned the case till Jan. 19 for mention.
