South Africa’s Banyana Banyana on Friday joined hosts Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroon in the semi-finals of the ongoing Women’s African Cup of Nations (AWCON).

In the final matches of Group A of the competition, South Africa came back from the dead to beat Egypt 5-0 and finish second in the group.

South Africa had on Saturday drawn 0-0 with Zimbabwe and lost 0-1 to Cameroon on Tuesday, but a resurgence saw them dashing the Egyptians’ hopes.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the north Africans had beaten Zimbabwe 1-0 on Tuesday to have high hopes of winning the group’s other ticket.

But the win ensured the Egyptians stayed on three points to drop to third, while the South Africans moved up to second with four points.

The hosts maintained their perfect run with a 2-0 defeat of Zimbabwe to finish with the maximum nine points, after 2-0 and 1-0 wins over Egypt and South Africa.

Cameroon will now meet the Group B runners-up in the semi-finals, while South Africa will take on the Group B winners, who are likely to be Nigeria’s Super Falcons.

The Nigerian side, seven-times winners of the competition, lead the group with four points from one win and one draw in two matches.

Ghana’s Black Queens are below on them on goals difference, with the Ghanaians having a seemingly-difficult tie on Saturday against Mali who have three points from two matches.

The Super Falcons seem to have an easier task as they take on Kenya who have lost their two matches and are out of contention for a semi-final ticket.(NAN)
