Flood: Niger to relocate victims in 25 communities

Niger State Governor, Alhaji Abubakar Sani Bello has directed residents of over 25 communities sacked by flood along the plains of River Niger and its tributaries be evacuated and resettled to upland as a temporary measure.

The affected communities currently submerged by flood are in four wards of Edati and Mokwa Local Government areas of the state.

Governor Sani Bello gave the directive when he visited Guza village, one of the community affected by the flood in Edati local government area of the state.

He said that the Niger State Emergency Management Agency , NSEMA should ensure that the communities that affected are taken to safe haven as it was being reported that the water level would continue to rise.

Addressing some of the victims at Guza Village, Gov. Sani Bello assured that government will supply them with basic needs and drugs as well as supply food and other relief materials to curtail the outbreak of epidemic and as cushion overall effect of the flood.

Moved by the plight of the victims, the governor directed relevant authorities saddled with the relocation exercise to ensure immediate compliance, warning that he will deal decisively with act of laxity or non-compliance.

The governor who commended the prompt intervention of the emergency agency, said “we are grateful to God that out of the over 25 communities affected no causuality is recorded”.

Being an agrarian area, the governor emphatised with the victims over the economic loss suffered due to the sub-merging of vast hectare of rice, sugarcane farms and other food crops by the flood.

Governor Sani Bello added that government will fashion out lasting solution to the areas prone to flooding.

Spokesperson of the victims, Hassan Umar Sonfada of Ketso village, appreciated the visit of the governor. He said the visit has reassured the people that the government is not only responsive but also responsible.

He assured the governor of their resolve to cooperate with government’s efforts at relocating them upland.
