A college student, who is the first person to be charged with involvement with al-Qaeda in Malaysia, was sentenced to 12 years imprisonment by a high court on Monday.

Malaysian Mohamad Azman, 20, who had been studying in Egypt, had pleaded guilty on Sept. 27.

The judge, Mohamad Samah, ordered that the sentence run from Azman’s arrest on Dec. 7, 2015.

The news portal reported that Azman had been charged with entering Syria in 2014 where he became a member of the Jund al-Aqsa terrorist group, formerly a sub-unit of al-Qaeda.

Police arrested Azman when he arrived at Kuala Lumpur International Airport from Egypt. (dpa/NAN)
