The Canadian government has said it will provide over 26 million Canadian dollars humanitarian assistance to the Lake Chad Basin Region in 2016.

The beneficiary countries in Lake-Chad basin are Nigeria, Cameroon, Niger and Chad.

This is contained in a statement on Friday in Abuja by Public Affairs Officer, High Commissioner of Canada, Mrs Ezinne Uluocha.

It stated that the assistance was in response to the humanitarian needs in the Lake Chad Basin Region, including those related to the growing insecurity caused by regional terrorism.

It stated that this support would help to provide food, drinking water, hygiene, sanitation and health services.

The statement added that it would also provide treatment for acute malnutrition and support for livelihoods for vulnerable populations, including refugees, internally displaced persons and communities hosting refugees.

It stated that the Canada’s partners involved in the exercise include the United Nation High Commissioner refugees (UNHCR), the World Food Programme (WFP) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).

Others it stated are the office of the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) CARE, l‘Euvre Leger, Oxfam Quebec, Development and Peace, Action Against and Norwegian Refugee Council. (NAN)
