Coutinho: scores equaliser for Liverpool

Liverpool knocked out Manchester United in the Europa League after holding the Van Gaal boys 1-1 at Old Trafford and extending their aggregate lead 3-1. They won the first leg 2-0.

In London, Tottenham also bowed out to  Borussia Dortmund, losing 1-5 on aggregate.

For Liverpool, the victory over Manchester United earned them  their first European quarter-final in  six years. And it would not have been without the help of a brilliant goal by Philippe Coutinho.

United had  halved the 2-0 round of 16 first-leg deficit through Anthony Martial’s spot kick, But Liverpool deflated their hosts with Coutinho’s equalising goal on the stroke of half-time. It was a wonderful solo effort as the Brazilian left Guillermo Varela in his wake on a diagonal dash from the left side of the box before beating David de Gea with a lovely dinked finish.

The other six teams in the quarter-final draws today are: Villareal, Athletic Bilbao, Shakhtar Donetsk, Braga, Sevilla and  Sparta Prague.
