Atiur Rahman:resigns

Similar to the theft of $190,000 from Nigeria’s Central Bank, hackers and Internet scammers have successfully stung the Bangladesh central bank, stealing $101 million and forcing Bank Governor Atiur Rahman to resign.

More daring for the hackers was that the money was siphoned from the account the bank holds at the U.S. Federal Reserve.

The hackers simply rummaged through for the heist.

A source in Bangladeshi Prime Minister’s Office confirmed Rahman ‘ s resignation.

The official who did not like to be named said Rahman on Tuesday morning submitted his resignation letter.

Hours before submitting resignation letter, he told journalists that ” I wish to tender my resignation from my employment as the Bangladesh Bank governor.”

He said, “I’ve drafted my resignation letter and will submit it after meeting prime minister.”

Ihsanul Karim, prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s press secretary, told Xinhua that he will hold a press briefing later in the day to provide further details in this connection.

The stolen money was transferred to Sri Lanka and the Philippines, it was.

Some 20 million U.S. dollars of it has so far been recovered, sources close to central bank of Bangladesh had earlier said.
